It started out as an impulsive decision to illicitly install the game into my office workstation — just so I could keep myself from falling asleep at my desk. Pretty soon every computer at home was firing peas at hordes of the undead — and I couldn’t be any happier.
Plants vs Zombies is a tower defense game loosely based on real-time strategy games such as Warcraft and Starcraft. As the home owner of a zombie-infested front and back lawn, it is your job to organize a defense using a line of enchanted garden plants that can shoot down, blow up, and street pizza the walking dead.
Besides the main game there are also a horde of mini-games unlocked with every stage of your progress, including a deceptively simple puzzle mode, a never ending horde of zombies in survival mode, and fun and creative alternative game play mechanics in the mini games mode.
Last but not least, is the witty tongue-in-cheek humour the developers have exhibited across the entire game: the visual puns on modern pop culture, the hilarious methods employed by the plants to dispatch zombies, and the unforgettable lyrics to their addictive end theme “There’s a zombie on your lawn”.
PVZ is brilliant and lovable on so many different levels. Easy to pick up but very tricky to master, it makes chucking giant gobs of butter at the undead sound like a good idea.
